Spray Paint Disaster Becomes a Cute Lamp Makeover!

I sometimes forget the "rules" regarding spray painting in cold temperatures.  I've never really paid much attention because I live in Houston which is a hot, sticky sauna most of the year (and I have bad hair pictures to prove it!)

Enter, this lamp...

Doesn't look too bad, right?  It started off black and I sprayed it white to go with all the coastal stuff that I'm putting together.

A closer look...

Yikes!  The spray paint gods were not with me that day!  The paint started bubbling up and peeling, as a result of the cool temperature.

Note to self:  Cold + Spray Paint = Hot Mess!

So I started playing around (which is always dangerous!) and the end result is this!

Pretty cute, eh?  Here's what I did (and I'm still working on my goal of taking step by step pictures -- bad blogger, bad blogger *slapping myself repeatedly*):

1.  Wrapped lamp base in burlap.  Secured with a rubberband at the top.  I cut a small hole in the burlap on the backside for the cord to go through.
2.  Trimmed the edges of the burlap so they weren't too long.
3.  Took 3 shell necklaces and tucked them under the rubber band in the front of the lamp to create a sort of "tassel".
4.  Hot glued small conch shells on the lampshade

Disaster averted!

A sneak peek at my living room makeover

Last week, I showed all my mismatched accessories....

And what they looked like after I went crazy with white spray paint...

I'm off to a PTA meeting this morning, but I started placing things in the room and wanted to show you what I've done so far.

This was an ugly (and that's putting it mildly) brown lamp I found at Goodwill last week.  I think it looks nice now in my new coastal living room.  I spray painted my red coral GRAY.  See more on that here.

One side of the mantle...

And the other side...

Notice, I'm not showing you the whole mantle.  That is because there is an electronics eye-sore sitting in the middle.  You work with what you have I guess.

And here's just a little something I found last week...

It was on clearance at Target for $14.  Normally, I'm much more of a cheapskate, but I thought this bleached wood tray would be perfect in my new coastal space.

More to come on my living room makeover, including:  new window treatments, pillows and wall decor.

For us technically challenged folk! Who me?

I found the coolest thing at Lowe's today and thought I would share. This is a pendant light that screws into the lightbulb socket of a recessed (can) light. Kit was $15. Glass shade was $12. You just adjust the cord. No electrical involved, yippee! And the best part -- no asking the hubby for help! (groaning & grumbling avoided, YES!)
