Trash pickin'....It's a good thing!

My name is Kendall and I am a trash picker!  The first step is admitting you have a problem right?

My neighbors (and Mr. FYN) think I'm absolutely nuts!

I made my rounds this morning and scored some cool stuff.  Check it out...

With a little oil rubbed bronze spray paint and a snappy new fabric on the seat, I think this will be great for my master bathroom dressing area!

2 MDF doors (about 4 ft long each)
I have no clue what I will do with these, but I grabbed them anyway.
Do you have any clever ideas for them?  Lemme hear it!

I have several things in my home that are trash day finds, but some of my most recent treasures are...

The 8x10 rug in our game room!  After a heavy dousing of Febreze and a long hard vacuuming, it's as good as new.  And it was FREEEEEEE!

*Sidenote - Mr. Finesse Your Nest was SO concerned that it was flea-ridden, so he put a white piece of paper on the rug to see if fleas would jump on it.  EWWWWW!  But, no fleas, fortunately!

The entertainment unit in the game room (forgive for the mess of cords, not pretty!)  I want to get a pretty runner to go under the TV, but for now I'm using a flannel blanket to make sure the furniture doesn't get scratched up.

It was an ugly brown '70s throwback before I spray painted with Rustoleum Colonial Red and used a little dark brown stain to "age it up".

So, do you trash pick?

What are some of your best treasures?

Here are my tips for "Trash Pickin' Like a Rock Star"

1.  The trash day right after a weekend will usually yield the best finds (people clean out their junk on the weekends!)

2.  Don't worry too much about examining things at the pickin' spot.  Just throw it in your car and you can inspect it at home.  If it really should have stayed in the trash, it can always go back out with yours next trash day.

3.  Wear comfortable shoes (don't be like me who dropped the entertainment unit on my flip-flopped toe!)

4.  Think outside the box.  Can that rug with the big stain be painted?  Can you pop the broken mirror out of that frame and use the frame for a project?  Can you buy pillow slips or recover ratty throw pillows?  You get the idea.

So let me hear about your trash pickin' adventures!

LOVE that chair! And thanks for your comments on my oval chalkboard. I have some small clips and I'm definitely going to try them. Who knows, maybe it finally be love at first sight! =)

LOVE that chair. I really don't see why someone would throw that baby away!

I see maybe a chalkboard/score board for your game room with the door??? Might be fun. :)

Ooh, yes, bulk pick-up day is a good one around here. I'd love to go into a more ritzy area and see what those bulk pick-up pickings are like!

Those doors are great for lots of things. I've seen some poeple do the family name in vinyl lettering or make some kind of sign/plaque for over fireplaces, or walls that just need something. The ever popular chalkboard {maybe for the kitchen for menu and/or shopping list}.

I agree, that chair is awesome! I live in such a small town, people don't usually put large items out at the curb on trash day. The best time for trash pickin is when we have our annual garage sale day in June. People tend to put their unsold things along the curb because they just don't want to deal with it anymore!

I love love that chair. I need something just like it to go with my dresser in my bedroom.

I do love trash picking, though I must admit, I usually limit it to college dorms when the semester ends. Why? Because they throw away the best things -- I know. It wasn't too long ago I was a student.

Kendall,
Great finds! The doors are so useful. Painted signs, vinyl letters, Decoupage. You could find some olf corbals and do ashelf. Lots of goodies.

I have jumped out of my car on the street before wearing a suit and heels and wrestled a chair into the back seat of my car!

I saw some guys demo-ing an office building downtown the other day and I was sitting in my car at the red light. Out the window they throw this great old door! I was sitting there thinking, I need that door, I need that door. And I didn't get it!! I have been kicking my own tail ever since!!!

The stuff you found is GREAT! The door could be a cool headboard. That is what I wanted the one I saw for. A headboard in my sons room! I blew it!!

Have a great day!

Lou Cinda :)

My best (and only) dumpster find was a picnic bench table that was in perfect shape..., and regarding the door..., maybe they could be turned into wall art too. Remember my skinny door with the shells!

I am totally a trash picker.. Well let me make a change to that.. I am a trash spotter.. When on my way to my parents house I always check out all the side streets for stuff.. Then when I get to mom's I tell Dad and he goes with his truck to get it.. :) So I guess I am a father & daughter trash picker.. LOL..

My best (and only) trash pick up was a picnic bench right out of a big dumpster. It served us well for a couple of years while renting a cottage in CT.

You are much braver than I am. I don't go through people trash;) I had an uncle (that has been dead for over 10 yrs.) and he use to go through dumpsters! He was a contractor and he would bring home all kinds of things. You do find some great things. I like the little seat. Can't wait to see what you to do it.

I grew up that way. My parents would go to what they called the rich section of town on trash day and see what they threw out. We got alot of our stuff from it. I was so ashamed at the time.

Not too many people throw things out like they use to. Now its yards sales and charity shops. Even now and than I will see someone put something out and I will try and get it, not ashamed anymore.

That chair is a total gem!

I learned about the treasure of trash when I was little and my parents retrieved a brand new drum kit out of someone's pile to be picked up. My dad was a drummer and couldn't believe what a nice set it was.

There's a book I highly recommend to anyone who loves finding good trash and interior decorating. It's called Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews and it's as fun to read as it is informative about "junk." treasure.http://www.amazon.com/Savannah-Blues-Mary-Kay-Andrews/dp/0060519134

Thanks Meg for the book suggestion!

And thanks you guys for all the ideas on the doors!

ha! I'm a trash picker, too and my husband gets in on the action as well. We found a cute table that I painted when we lived in apartments and to this day it's one of my favorite pieces in our house. My husband is always looking for solid wood anything because he's a budding woodworker and is itching to put his tools to use. I can't believe you found such a great rug! And the chair is too cute!

I remember when I used to go "dumpster diving" with one of my closest friends. We'd hit the dumpsters behind JoAnn's Fabrics and Michale's Crafts and you wouldn't believe what we would find! Now they've outlawed it, guess they figure its better in a landfill than actually being used.

We got shelves for our garage when the neighbor across the street bought new steel ones. When we put our old wood ones out on the curb, another neighbor carried those home.

Driving around on Sunday evening after the garages sales are over can lead to some good freebies also.

what a great idea...I love it...I think those doors would make an excellent wall hanging with "Live, Love, and Laugh" painted on it???? What do you think??? some pretty scrolling boarders and voila! A beautiful wall hanging.. Debb

Gosh Kendall, I have never trash picked..sounds like fun..you found some great things. Would those doors work as headboards?

Going to trashpick on Wednesday, the day before trashday..we'll see if we find anything!!

That chair is fantastic. I'm dumpster diving in my own house right now. Have a chandelier that I want to paint red -- but I'm afraid that it's really something I should be bringing to the antique road show. ("Ma'am, this would be worth $100,000 if you hadn't painted it.")

Oh! I love trash pickin! You did a fine job. That is quite a haul! My best find ever was on a Wednesday morning, which is large pick up day in our neighborhood (I know. How cool is that, right?) So a neighbor had put out a whole set of white metal patio furniture...2 chairs and a loveseat. No cushions and in need of a paint job, but hey, I know a good deal when I see it. I buckled the baby into the car seat, and ran across the street to start grabbing it up and stashing it in the garage. I am so unashamed of my trash picking ways that I told my neighbor that I had snatched it up. She was thrilled and gave me a little table that went with the set!

Okay totally love the doors! From another designer: a bed headboard, or a desk, or a framed chalkboard... I love the idea of a desk just paint and a glasstop and sawhorse legs...
