Better Master Bedroom in the Making!

I'm participating in Amanda's "Show Me the Progress" party!  A couple of months ago, during her "Decorating Dilemmas" party, I shared the nightmare dilemma that was my master bedroom.  It hasn't been touched since we moved into our home 3 years ago.  Well, unless you consider slapping a couple of pieces of art on the wall and making the bed quality decorating!

I got a lot of great advice from fellow partiers (a big Texas thanks & a smooch to you!) and
 started the "transformation".

Here is what I call "the bed wall" BEFORE...

Not bad, but lacked some "oomph".  Some of the advice I got:  1) art or mirror over the bed and take the 2 pieces on the sides down and 2) More substantial lamps (yeah, they do look pretty "wimpy")

And here is my quickie transformation (Now imagine that the walls are painted a robin's egg blue or a light blue-gray color (Paint is coming later!)

Better right?

I want to eventually replace the bedding as well, but can't decide what.  Thinking once I get the walls painted, a crisp white might be nice with pops of color in the throw pillows.  Your thoughts?

Hello Lover!

I found the lamps at Home Goods for $39.99 a piece.  I stood in the lamp aisle for at least 30 minutes trying to talk myself out of it (the other customers definitely thought I was looney!), but the lamps won!  Home Goods is dangerous.  It's like heroin for wannabe decorators!

I bought these 12x12 scrapbook frames at Michael's on sale $4 a piece.  They have a nice 1" wood (or plastic that resembles wood) moulding with a rope design.

Then I saw this jumbo pad of 12x12 scrapbook paper, marked down to $11.99.  I used 4 sheets for the art project and still have a ton left to do other things with!

This took me 5 minutes to put together and about 10 min to hang (using my trusty laser level that I love!)

Remember my "wall of furniture" from before and all the clunky dark accessories?

I moved the dresser to the bathroom wall.  I was worried it would block the path to the loo, but it works!  I got rid of all the clunky accessories.  It looks a little "bare", but it's a work in progress.  Another comment was to hang the mirror.  I turned it to horizontal instead of vertical, which I think looks much better.  Eventually, I want to get a round mirror.

And here's where the "wall of furniture" was.  I angled the armoire in the corner.  Not sure what to put on top and the wall next to it needs something dramatic (and the TV cords need to be concealed, yuck!)  Any ideas?

I had these cute little cube ottomans that I bought at Target for $15 a piece.  I think the colors work in the room, but not sure exactly what to do with them yet.

I also added this slipper chair.  I just felt like there was so much "WOOD" in this room and an upholstered piece might break it up a bit.  What do you think?  Good?  Bad?

The window is seat is still....well....the window seat.   That will be my next project.  I got lots of good advice on window treatments, cushions, etc.

I bought these shower curtains at Home Goods last year, 4 for $7 a piece.  They are white with a dark brown dot border.  Was thinking of transforming them into some sort of window treatment.

So, how am I doing so far?  Any comments or suggestions are truly (and I mean truly) appreciated!

Thanks again to Amanda for hosting this update party!  I hope to have my patio underway for the next one!

  3. Gorgeous. You are definitely doing great! I love the idea of the scrapbook frames and paper. I saw an idea of using spray adhesive on foam board with sheets of scrapbook paper. Just got back from HomeGoods. That place is dangerous!

  6. It's coming along nicely! I like it. I bought that same pack of paper! I've used it everywhere. Lost Sock art, mirror, now I'm doing clothespins! I love that pack!

Great minds think alike! Good job on the bedroom! I can't remember, but were you once considering painting the furniture?

  9. Hey Kendall! I love the shower curtain window treatment idea. If you already have blinds in there, you can make a "roman shade" out of them with the fabric. I did it this weekend for our office, but haven't posted yet. The room is looking good! I'm thinking I'll be spending time this weekend re-arranging too! :)

  10. You're doing a great job - I love all the little details that really make the room come together! The scrapbook page art is awesome, as well as the lamps. Keep it up - I can't wait to see it all painted!

  11. I love that! It would be my favorite room in my house!

  12. Oh, gosh...you did great! I LOVE the bed wall now. The artwork is genius!!! The lamps are so wonderful and look so great there. I like the brown and aqua colors (that is what your bedding is, right? Not sure!). But if you switched to a crisp white, that would look nice, too. The slipper chair is perfect and your reasoning makes sense to me. I like how you split the dresser pieces apart like that and hung the mirror the other direction. I think you've done great so far!!

  13. All I can say is 'wow.' You transformed that room QUICKLY. The new art on the bed wall completely transformed that space, and I love those lamps! I actually got the same ones for Christmas but with plain shades instead of those cute floral ones. The whole room already looks completely different! Love, love, love! Oh, and keep the slipper chair. I love it!

  14. Likey likey! Definitely love that slipper chair to soften the look. So soothing and comfy. Come help me with my master bedroom!!!

  17. Great job! Those lamps are darling! And the ottomans are great. When I saw them I thought they would look really nice at the foot of the bed. Then I saw you had the slipper chair there. Try putting the ottomans at the foot of the bed and the slipper chair next to the armoir. Just a thought. You have done some amazing things with this room.

  18. Oh my gosh Bea said exactly what I was going to say! Try the ottomans (ottomen?) at the foot of the bed.

I love what you've done! The scrapbook pages are so simple and so elegant and I LOVE the lamps. Money well spent.

Thanks so much for linking up to Finished for Friday!

  19. Absolutely cool transformation, Kendall! In fact, I need to do the same thing..., hang "organized" art over my bed in the master. It's amazing the difference it makes..., it looks so designery now.

    Have a great weekend!

  20. Oh my word! You work fast. :) I am working on a "button" for a new "Show Me the Progress" party for all the people who have been linking up with Decorating Dilemmas. You have got to link this one when the party goes up! It looks amazing!! I love the lamps, and the frames over the bed really make a difference. What a great, relaxing spot. :)

  21. Your transformation looks great! The new lamps are so sweet and the art is a fab idea!

Putting something beside the chest of drawers... is there room to put the slipper chair there? You could also put a tall, but not too leafy, green plant or tall vase full of taller {white maybe?} branches.

  22. Hi Kendall!
I'm glad I read all of the previous comments before I left mine. My thoughts were exactly as Bea said - with a tad more elaboration. The ottomans would need to be the correct scale, so as not to be dwarfed by the bed. And, of course, you wouldn't want to be running into the slipper chair, beside the armoire, getting into that side of the bed. But, if the chair fits there comfortably, you could place a stack of over-sized books, a table or something beside it to make a cozy little reading nook.

  23. Wow, it looks great! Love the idea of using scrapbook paper as wall art. The lamps are adorable too, totally worth the cost!

It's funny, I have those same little cubes from target in my dorm room, except in pink!

  24. I like the way the "bed wall" looks now. And the lamps are really great, so are the ottomans. You have a great eye and lots of wonderful ideas.

  27. I really like the look of the framed papers over your bed. It adds a lot of punch to the room.

  28. I LOVE your bedroom! I would never want to leave that room in the morning. You've got great style. And yes, a decorators heroin is Home Goods. Such a great analogy.

  29. Kendall-

I am loving it ALL. I love the little scrap book paper frames, the graphic prints are so fun.

I also think the upholstered chair is a good idea to bring some softness to your room. And I love the fabric on the ottomans.

I am impressed that this was a quick makeover, it looks totally beautiful! You really have some nice pieces of furniture.

Thanks for joining the party! I hope you do again soon!

  30. Wow, I think you are doing a fantastic mini tweak of your private space. I love it all. Those lamps were worth the investment. It was the 1st thing I noticed in your 1st pic. Love your spring touch to lighten the room up. How fun that you are gonna paint too. I hope I get a peak at the revamp of the shower curtains for your window treatment...you go girl.

  31. OMG great minds think alike! I just came across your blog this morning and then read this post- I found the same lamp at Home Goods (but I bought the version that had 3 turquoise balls stacked with the same shade as yours). I love the color combination! It's amazing how just the few pops that you added to your bedroom made such a large impact! Can't wait to see it once you paint!

  32. So jealous of the lamps from Home Goods. I was in the aisle for about 10 min too, but I talked myself out of them because they did not match AT ALL with my colors. Thought the hubs would kill me if I bought just to redo!

  33. Kendall, you are so on the right track with his room - seems like you re putting a lot of thought into what you put into it - LOVE the white vases, and the lampshades, and I'm so jealous of that window seat. OH! the possibilities! (:

  34. Wow! What a transformation! Those lamps and cubes are absolutely adorable. I'm not sure if there's room but what about placing the cubes at the end of your bed to act as a sort of "bench". Love it!

  35. I LOVE the blue! What a great choice for your space!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I really do love the changes you've made. For that space next to the armoire, how about a huge mirror leaning against the wall? Easy fix, yet would make a big statement. Just a thought!

  37. Fantastic progress!!! :) I am loving it!! What about a stack of baskets to hide those cords? either rectangle (suitcase) type ones or round (hat box) type ones. Storage and they will hide cords!!

  38. Oh and you made an EXCELLENT decision on the lamps!!

  39. I've said it before but I'll say it once more, fabulous!! You did an amazing job!

  41. Love those lamps! I saw similar ones at Homegoods too, and may need to go back to get them.
The frames look wonderful over the bed.
How about putting the ottomans at the end of the bed?

  42. Came over from Serenity Now & have to tell you that your new artwork looks SO great! Love the colors a lot. And those lamps are amazing too! Great job!

  43. WOW you are fast!! L-O-V-I-N-G the art, the LAMPS and the slipper chair! And I think HomeGoods needs a 12 step program... I was that crazy woman in the lamp aisle just last weekend! ;)

  44. I love those lamps! I was at Homegoods last weekend looking at lamps for my living room and I didn't find the perfect ones. I did notice when I was there that they have lay-away so if I found lamps as great as those I wouldn't feel bad about spending that much if I paid for it over a few weeks!

  45. This looks GREAT! I love the colors and the lamps and I am really liking the scrapbook paper art!! I can only hope my bedroom turns out this nice when I am finished.
Found this through the Show Me the Progress Party...thanks for sharing!

  46. I love the art and the lamps - they were worth every penny!

For the wall that used to be filled with furniture, how about a big leaning mirror? IKEA has one that might be perfect, and is, of course cheap. Just an idea, it might too much mirror for the space...

  47. Great changes! I am in love with your scrapbook paper project. I had no idea that frames were made in this special size.

  48. I have just one of your beautiful lamps... I am looking high and low for another. Do you have any clue where I could find a match???? Please please help!
